News Show 3

09/22/13
I collected everyone's readers and VO's, fact-checked, reordered them for structure, created transitions, edited grammar, and sent the final script to Olivia. This was extremely difficult, as only a handful of writers got their stories in on time.

News Show Week 2

09/15/13
I collected everyone's readers, fact-checked, reordered them for structure, created transitions, edited grammar, and sent the final script to Olivia. This went slightly quicker than last week but I'm hoping to move towards not spending this much time editing.
Writing the script throughout the day: 4 hours
TOTAL: 13 hours

09/16/13
The second news show was filmed today and I got there early and stayed late (for a total time there of 2 hours). Again, this went more smoothly than last week but not everything is totally worked out yet. We are making progress! We also took photos for admissions today to put on Instagram and Facebook.

Start of the School Year

This semester, I will be co-producing the news show with Olivia DeArment. My roles will include assigning stories, keeping track of who is coming to the show, assigning jobs, following up with everyone's stories, editing the readers and voice overs, and writing the script. All of my duties will be in pre-production, and Olivia's will be in post. We decided to reconstruct

from 08/30/13 - 09/08/13
Throughout the week, I check in with the other practicum students who were assigned to write stories.

09/08/13
Tonight, I hounded everyone for their readers. Once I received their readers, I edited them for content and structure. Some facts were wrong and there were lots of grammar and broadcast-style issues. I wrote transitions and anchor tags and attempted to connect the script together. I looked back on my broadcast writing notes and used them for comparison.
Writing the script throughout the day: 5 hours
TOTAL: 6 hours

09/09/13
The first news show was recorded today. I got there early and stayed late and we had some issues with the tricaster and the set but everything was solved by the end. We made a list of what we need to fix for next week and are ready to film for the 16th.
News Show (with before and after): 2 hours

Week of March 25

March 25, 2013
Today, Katie and I shot b-roll of people falling asleep at Tutu's. We also got students ordering coffee. We learned that it is difficult to find b-roll with some of the topics we pick for packages.
B-roll: 1 hour
TOTAl: 42 hours

March 26, 2013
Katie and I shot interviews today with Dr. Lynch and two students about their sleeping schedules. We asked Dr. Lynch to re-do the interview that we did with him last week because we didn't have audio. Before we left to do the interviews, this time, we tested the audio. It was present but the mixer is definitely broken at the wire.
Interviews: 1 hour
TOTAL: 43 hours

At night, we edited the package. It didn't take very long because we had a general idea of a script and we just had to cut up the interviews and record voice overs.
Editing: 2 hours
TOTAL: 45 hours

March 27, 2013
We shot the news today and Olivia DeArment and I decided that we will never, ever write scripts DURING the time we are supposed to shoot the news. Everyone gets cranky when things are slowed down like that and it isn't fair to make everyone wait. So we will have an efficient system and always have the scripts done the night before we go in to shoot.

Week of March 11

March 11
In the morning, Bri, Jordan, Christina and I showed up to shoot the news show and immediately began setting up the studio. We had everything ready for Austen but Austen never came. So I taught them how to use everything to the best of my knowledge. Even though we didn't get to actually shoot the news, I think we got a lot accomplished. I also re-wrapped cables.

In the afternoon, I shot Hillary's interview for the ADD package. I used headphones and heard a hum but I never imagined the hum would be as bad as it was in editing. The biggest challenge of shooting an interview alone is that the person never knows where to look.

March 12
In the afternoon, I got b-roll of students to the ADD package. It is extremely difficult to not be disruptive to a class while shooting them. I have been focusing my broll on sequencing shots more.

I edited for three hours with Tessa in the late afternoon. I taught her how to set a noise print in Soundtrack Pro, isolate a hum, and reduce the noise in the clip. After Tessa left, Christina came and we edited for another 2.5 hours. It took longer than I anticipated because I was trying to fix the audio and help her write VOs.

B-Roll: 30 minutes
Editing: 5.5 hours
Total: 39 hours

March 13
In the morning, Maggie and I did the anchor shoot for the ADD package. Then, I stayed with Maggie to edit and then exported for her so we could hand it in to Austen.

At 10:40, we shot the news (for real this time). Only Bri and I came to help Austen. We had some issues with lighting today but Austen decided to just fix it in post production.
Anchor shoot/editing: 1 hour

News March 6

We shot the news on Wednesday because Monday was the first day back from break. We had a good turnout and we are trying to rotate everyone through all the positions so that they are able to do each job adequately. That is my goal for the end of the semester - to make sure that anyone can come into the control room and know exactly what to do so it makes it easier for Austen.

February Stuff

NOTE: I know that these hours were before spring break so if they don't count just let me know and I will delete this post but I have them all written down on a log so I know how many I did on each day!

Friday, February 15
Tracy and I shot student interviews for the sexual health package. It was extremely difficult to get students willing to talk about this topic and I learned that it sometimes help to just use your friends who you know will talk to you for packages like this.
Shooting: 1.5 hours
TOTAL: 21 hours

Monday, February 18
I helped with the news show and then in the afternoon, shot broll of a couple for the sexual health package. This was also difficult because it was hard to find enough interesting shots to cover a package that is on a sensitive topic. Then at night, I edited in The Southern Office. Then Tracy and McKenzie arrived and we did it together for 2 more hours.

Tuesday, February 19
Because we didn't have enough broll, Tracy and I went to Walmart to get shots of different types of contraceptives. Unlike stricter stores, Walmart didn't question us coming in with a camera, which was helpful. We spent a while trying to decide how to get interesting shots without it looking silly. It was easier to know what type of broll we needed because we had already edited a bit.
Walmart: 1 hour
TOTAL: 28 hours

Wednesday, February 20
I finished editing the package today and included clips from Mean Girls to lighten the mood of the package. I have never really included something funny in a package like that but it actually fit and flowed nicely. Also, it is a reference that everyone can understand and appreciate.
Editing: 2 hours
TOTAL: 30 hours

Monday News

Today, we had news and we didn't have the T2i camera because someone had signed it out. Instead, we used Dr. Bradford's HD camera, which wasn't much of a difference. There were far too many people in the studio, so I started to run teleprompter but then just "supervised" instead. I learned today that I am apparently "the woman in charge".

News and Editing

I forgot to include the news show in my last post but I helped in the studio on Monday with Austen. I signed out the camera and helped everyone get set up in their positions.

Tonight, I finished editing the Nutrition Binder package. I think that it is a solid package, except for the focusing issues we have with the camera.

Nutrition Binder Package

On Friday, we began shooting an interview and b roll in the cafeteria for our package. We had issues with the focus adjusting itself and getting blurry at times. To correct this, we just have to put b roll over our interview where it slips out of focus.

Spring Semester Start!

January 19, 2013
On Saturday, I shot an interview with Tessa and Maria in the morning at the wellness center for our Personal Trainer package. We went slow and I explained how to set up and break down the camera and how to shoot in a setting with varied lighting.
The interview with Kayle went well!
Hours: 2 (including setting up and testing the camera beforehand)

Later in the day, I shot b-roll with Christina in the Wellness Center. We tried to get a as much as we possibly could because a setting such as the gym gives many different scenes to shoot at.
Hours: 1

January 20, 2013
I wrote two advancement readers for the news show for Austen. I used the knowledge from broadcast writing that I learned about readers to get my clear and concise message across.

January 21, 2013
On Monday, I shot an interview with Natalie Mark about her experience with a personal trainer. She was very informative and I believe that it went well.
