Final Blog Post

This semester in practicum I learned a lot from my hands-on hours. I worked on the news show and Go Healthy FSC. I think that the biggest issue that I overcame this semester was transitioning from the equipment I was used to working with at my high school to the equipment here. I learned how to operate a switcher again because I was used to a Tri-Caster with a digital switcher. I also learned to troubleshoot when people messed up the wires and lights in the studio. The studio was very different but transitioning made me realize that I have to be flexible and apply what I know to any situation in broadcast.
Working with Go Healthy FSC taught me a lot. First off, I learned to not endorse the use of electronic cigarettes. Second, I learned that I need to include more research in my packages. Third, I know that I should always use a microphone and not let my camera mic pick up sound because it sounds awful with wind in the background. People also get extremely annoyed when you ask them to reshoot an interview so it has to be done correctly the first time. Another thing I learned is that there are no shortcuts in broadcast. Cutting corners only produces bad work and it is extremely obvious to other people who know broadcast. I also discovered my biggest pet peeve in the world – when someone shoots something without a tripod. I don’t work very well with people on packages because I am a control freak but will never speak up. When someone does something such as shooting without a tripod, I always feel bad speaking up but I learned that it is necessary to. Even though it is uncomfortable making suggestions against someone else, it is better to have a good final product. I have gotten better at working with others on projects and packages since the beginning of the semester.
Working on the news show also taught me a lot this semester. Other than learning how to us the studio, I learned that it is difficult to find new and interesting news going on at Florida Southern. We often ran out of story ideas because there were no events that we knew of or the campus announcements didn’t come out yet. It is easy to report on things that you are involved in, but that isn’t fair to the rest of the viewers. I also learned that no one knows we have a campus channel, or news show, or Go Healthy FSC show. It is difficult to publicize and get others to watch the shows and frustrating that we don’t have an audience. I hope that this changes in the future and we find a way to get the word out to the students and faculty of FSC. It would also be great if the cafeteria and wellness center could have our channel on for students to see what we work on.
Overall, it has been a very productive semester and I learned a lot in these four short months. I look forward to practicum and more broadcast classes next semester.

The Past 2 Weeks

News and Go Healthy FSC (November 5th)
The news show ran smoothly while we were there, but we realized that there were glitches later. In the Go Healthy FSC meeting, we talked about new story ideas and where everyone was in terms of their packages.

Interview with Pat  (November 9th)
On Friday, Katie and I interviewed Pat Macleoud about his sugar intake, since he has diabetes. The focus of our package was the difference between natural and artificial sugars so he gave us information about which kind he uses and why. He also explained how a diabetic's body breaks down sugar, as opposed to a healthy person.

Editing the Sugar Package (November 11th)
Katie and I couldn't get into The Southern office Sunday night, so we spent time writing the script and laying out the framework for the package. I really hate writing scripts so it is difficult for me to sit down and write it without seeing everything in the package but I am learning to not just jump in and edit right away.

Monday, the day of Broadcast
On Monday, we had Go Healthy FSC and the News Show. At news, I operated the camera so that the record button got pushed this time!!!! At Go Healthy FSC, we talked about the packages that were due Wednesday of that week and finishing those up. Then, I shot broll for the sugar package and the stand-up with Sarah also for that package.

Butts and Guns Package
On Tuesday, Tracy and I shot the butts and guns class at the Wellness center. It was difficult because the participants and the staff didn't seem to want us in there. We stayed for the entire class and interviewed someone who took the class after it.

News

We shot the news in HD again with the canon rebel t2i and everything went smoothly. We still don't know why the audio sounds bad when it's aired but maybe it will be fixed this time around. Hopefully once we perfect the setup of this show, we can move to a two-anchor format.

Week of Oct 14

On Sunday, October 14, I shot b-roll for Midnight Madness and edited it the next day.  I learned that it was extremely difficult to get good shots in darkness, especially when there are flashing lights everywhere. The camera had to be operated completely manually because the auto-exposure would not adjust well to the lights.

On Monday, we did the news and created our first HD show! It looked much more professional and the green screen added a nice touch.

On Tuesday and Wednesday I helped Katie edit her golf package and watched Austen edit the news show. It helped to observe After Effects since I had never seen it before, but Austen hadn't really used it either so it didn't help to have both of us together. I hope to learn more about it in the future and eventually learn to make some kind of graphic intro for it.

Monday Meetings and Tuesday Editing

On Monday, we shot the news show and didn't run into any issues with the audio! We saw Dr. Allen's version that was shot on the T2i against the blue screen and I think that after fall break, we should work on moving to use those cameras to get the news in HD.

At the Wellness meeting, we talked about the packages that are in progress for the next show and how the old show was tweaked to fit the Go Healthy FSC theme. We also talked a

Yesterday, (Tuesday), I helped Katie edit the road direction change package. We worked on correcting the audio levels and deciding which b-roll to use. We ran into a few technical issues and had trouble correcting the unsteadiness of the shots but overall, it turned out well.

News and The Show Formerly Known As Wellness TV

During the shooting of the news today, we attempted to use a T2i and shoot Austen against the blue background to chroma key it out later. We weren't able to mount it to the tripod, even with Dr. Allen's help, so we decided to postpone that for this week. Eventually, it would be nice to be able to use a T2i in the studio to shoot in HD for some of the shows.

The Wellness TV meeting was today and we discussed the "facelift" to the program. I learned that I need to add more research to my packages and maybe get my script approved more than once. I also learned that even some experts can sound awful on camera.

After the meeting, Katie and I shot an interview with a senior about the change in road direction. We will be editing Wednesday to get it completed for the second show.

News and Wellness

On Monday morning, we shot the second news show. I set up the camera and ran the teleprompter. It went much more smoothly than the first news show but we need to be more organized about sending our stories to Austen.

At the WTV meeting, we discussed the packages being shot this week and I will be helping Olivia with the neurowater package. I can't wait to see the finished product of the first WTV show!

WTV Package

Katie and I spent Saturday gathering b-roll and trying to find someone who smokes to use in our package. We also shot the standup and recorded the VOs and I rewrote the script. I realized how hard it is not knowing many people at this school because we had a difficult time finding someone who smokes.

Time Shooting: 2 hours

Over the next few days, I edited the package (conferring with Katie about everything) and finally exported today. The most difficult part was adjusting all the audio because we shot in different places and picked up different variations of natural sound.

Mocs Talk News #1

Austen and I had to re-shoot the first installment of Mocs Talk News last night. The tape that we filmed on on the previous day had a glitch in it. We spent a long time in the studio trying to troubleshoot but we couldn't get the audio to work. While I was in there, I got to see how the equipment all connects and also what happens when one thing doesn't connect. It was frustrating because I do enjoy troubleshooting technical issues but this was one that I just could not fix. I also got the experience of running the studio without help! Austen anchored so he couldn't do any of the tech work so I set up the camera (white balanced, focused, framed the shot) then ran the teleprompter while Austen read the script. It was a really good day of practicing but it would've been better if we got it to work!

This morning, we attempted to shoot it again but didn't have a teleprompter. We ended up using a makeshift one by holding my laptop over the camera and scrolling down the script that the anchor had to read. We finally got a good take and we are done with the first news show!

News Intro

Yesterday, Lauren and I spent the morning creating the intro for Mocs Talk News. We filmed outside and got a few nice shots of the campus, but I had to re-shoot later because some were shaky. After we finished shooting, Lauren went to class and I edited the intro. I added music and a title graphic for the news show so it was ready to go for Austen to put in! I got to see just how important a title graphic was in pulling it all together.

Wellness Interview

Yesterday, Katie and I shot an interview for our electronic cigarettes package with Betty Calhoun, the Health Director at FSC. She was very well-prepared to speak and gave lots of insightful information about her opinion of the E-cigs. Katie had questions ready to prompt Betty with but Betty preferred to speak on her own.

News Show

Today we shot our first news show (still pending a name). We set up the studio and I operated that camera. Tomorrow, Lauren and I will shoot and edit the intro for the news show and we can hopefully get everything together by Thursday. This week I will be writing a story for the next news show that we will film on Monday.

Interview for Wellness

On Saturday, Katie and I conducted our first interview for the electronic cigarettes package. We also scheduled a time to meet with the director of the health center, Betty, to talk to her about her opinion on electronic cigarettes. We ran into issues with the audio but eventually came up with a solution to eliminate the buzzing.

Monday Meetings

This morning, we had the first meeting for the news show that will be starting in the coming weeks. We talked about what kind of stories and segments we wanted to work on and decided that our packages should focus on local and campus stories. We also decided that we want to have short advertisements or commercials for the events on campus. This week we will work on story ideas and talk about the format of the show before we get everything together. We also need a day to organize the studio!

At the Wellness TV meeting, we talked about our skills and what we are interested in working on and Katie Becker and I took on a package about electronic cigarettes. I am so excited for both groups to really get going so we can start airing the shows on the campus channel.

Men's Soccer Game

Today, I helped shoot the highlights of the men's soccer game vs. Coker. I learned that the humidity in the air can damage a camera, which is something that I did not have to deal with in New Jersey. I also learned that it can be challenging to shoot under the bright lights that are above the soccer field. (Especially without having a light for the camera.) I had never shot highlights of a soccer game before and although it was new, it wasn't difficult and was similar to other things I've shot.
