News Show Week 2

09/15/13
I collected everyone's readers, fact-checked, reordered them for structure, created transitions, edited grammar, and sent the final script to Olivia. This went slightly quicker than last week but I'm hoping to move towards not spending this much time editing.
Writing the script throughout the day: 4 hours
TOTAL: 13 hours

09/16/13
The second news show was filmed today and I got there early and stayed late (for a total time there of 2 hours). Again, this went more smoothly than last week but not everything is totally worked out yet. We are making progress! We also took photos for admissions today to put on Instagram and Facebook.

Start of the School Year

This semester, I will be co-producing the news show with Olivia DeArment. My roles will include assigning stories, keeping track of who is coming to the show, assigning jobs, following up with everyone's stories, editing the readers and voice overs, and writing the script. All of my duties will be in pre-production, and Olivia's will be in post. We decided to reconstruct

from 08/30/13 - 09/08/13
Throughout the week, I check in with the other practicum students who were assigned to write stories.
Correspondence with writers: 1 hour
TOTAL: 1 hour

09/08/13
Tonight, I hounded everyone for their readers. Once I received their readers, I edited them for content and structure. Some facts were wrong and there were lots of grammar and broadcast-style issues. I wrote transitions and anchor tags and attempted to connect the script together. I looked back on my broadcast writing notes and used them for comparison.
Writing the script throughout the day: 5 hours
TOTAL: 6 hours

09/09/13
The first news show was recorded today. I got there early and stayed late and we had some issues with the tricaster and the set but everything was solved by the end. We made a list of what we need to fix for next week and are ready to film for the 16th.
News Show (with before and after): 2 hours
TOTAL: 8 hours

from 09/06/13 - 09/15/13
Throughout the week, I check in with the other practicum students who were assigned to write stories.

Week of March 25

March 25, 2013
Today, Katie and I shot b-roll of people falling asleep at Tutu's. We also got students ordering coffee. We learned that it is difficult to find b-roll with some of the topics we pick for packages.
B-roll: 1 hour
TOTAl: 42 hours

March 26, 2013
Katie and I shot interviews today with Dr. Lynch and two students about their sleeping schedules. We asked Dr. Lynch to re-do the interview that we did with him last week because we didn't have audio. Before we left to do the interviews, this time, we tested the audio. It was present but the mixer is definitely broken at the wire.
Interviews: 1 hour
TOTAL: 43 hours

At night, we edited the package. It didn't take very long because we had a general idea of a script and we just had to cut up the interviews and record voice overs.
Editing: 2 hours
TOTAL: 45 hours

March 27, 2013
We shot the news today and Olivia DeArment and I decided that we will never, ever write scripts DURING the time we are supposed to shoot the news. Everyone gets cranky when things are slowed down like that and it isn't fair to make everyone wait. So we will have an efficient system and always have the scripts done the night before we go in to shoot.

Week of March 11

March 11
In the morning, Bri, Jordan, Christina and I showed up to shoot the news show and immediately began setting up the studio. We had everything ready for Austen but Austen never came. So I taught them how to use everything to the best of my knowledge. Even though we didn't get to actually shoot the news, I think we got a lot accomplished. I also re-wrapped cables.

In the afternoon, I shot Hillary's interview for the ADD package. I used headphones and heard a hum but I never imagined the hum would be as bad as it was in editing. The biggest challenge of shooting an interview alone is that the person never knows where to look.

News: 1 hour
Interview: 1 hour
Total: 33 hours

March 12
In the afternoon, I got b-roll of students to the ADD package. It is extremely difficult to not be disruptive to a class while shooting them. I have been focusing my broll on sequencing shots more.

I edited for three hours with Tessa in the late afternoon. I taught her how to set a noise print in Soundtrack Pro, isolate a hum, and reduce the noise in the clip. After Tessa left, Christina came and we edited for another 2.5 hours. It took longer than I anticipated because I was trying to fix the audio and help her write VOs.

B-Roll: 30 minutes
Editing: 5.5 hours
Total: 39 hours

March 13
In the morning, Maggie and I did the anchor shoot for the ADD package. Then, I stayed with Maggie to edit and then exported for her so we could hand it in to Austen.

At 10:40, we shot the news (for real this time). Only Bri and I came to help Austen. We had some issues with lighting today but Austen decided to just fix it in post production.
Anchor shoot/editing: 1 hour
News: 1 hour
TOTAL: 41 hours
