News and The Show Formerly Known As Wellness TV

During the shooting of the news today, we attempted to use a T2i and shoot Austen against the blue background to chroma key it out later. We weren't able to mount it to the tripod, even with Dr. Allen's help, so we decided to postpone that for this week. Eventually, it would be nice to be able to use a T2i in the studio to shoot in HD for some of the shows.

The Wellness TV meeting was today and we discussed the "facelift" to the program. I learned that I need to add more research to my packages and maybe get my script approved more than once. I also learned that even some experts can sound awful on camera.

Meeting: 30 minutes

After the meeting, Katie and I shot an interview with a senior about the change in road direction. We will be editing Wednesday to get it completed for the second show.

News and Wellness

On Monday morning, we shot the second news show. I set up the camera and ran the teleprompter. It went much more smoothly than the first news show but we need to be more organized about sending our stories to Austen.

At the WTV meeting, we discussed the packages being shot this week and I will be helping Olivia with the neurowater package. I can't wait to see the finished product of the first WTV show!

WTV Package

Katie and I spent Saturday gathering b-roll and trying to find someone who smokes to use in our package. We also shot the standup and recorded the VOs and I rewrote the script. I realized how hard it is not knowing many people at this school because we had a difficult time finding someone who smokes.

Over the next few days, I edited the package (conferring with Katie about everything) and finally exported today. The most difficult part was adjusting all the audio because we shot in different places and picked up different variations of natural sound.

Mocs Talk News #1

Austen and I had to re-shoot the first installment of Mocs Talk News last night. The tape that we filmed on on the previous day had a glitch in it. We spent a long time in the studio trying to troubleshoot but we couldn't get the audio to work. While I was in there, I got to see how the equipment all connects and also what happens when one thing doesn't connect. It was frustrating because I do enjoy troubleshooting technical issues but this was one that I just could not fix. I also got the experience of running the studio without help! Austen anchored so he couldn't do any of the tech work so I set up the camera (white balanced, focused, framed the shot) then ran the teleprompter while Austen read the script. It was a really good day of practicing but it would've been better if we got it to work!

This morning, we attempted to shoot it again but didn't have a teleprompter. We ended up using a makeshift one by holding my laptop over the camera and scrolling down the script that the anchor had to read. We finally got a good take and we are done with the first news show!

News Intro

Yesterday, Lauren and I spent the morning creating the intro for Mocs Talk News. We filmed outside and got a few nice shots of the campus, but I had to re-shoot later because some were shaky. After we finished shooting, Lauren went to class and I edited the intro. I added music and a title graphic for the news show so it was ready to go for Austen to put in! I got to see just how important a title graphic was in pulling it all together.

Wellness Interview

Yesterday, Katie and I shot an interview for our electronic cigarettes package with Betty Calhoun, the Health Director at FSC. She was very well-prepared to speak and gave lots of insightful information about her opinion of the E-cigs. Katie had questions ready to prompt Betty with but Betty preferred to speak on her own.

News Show

Today we shot our first news show (still pending a name). We set up the studio and I operated that camera. Tomorrow, Lauren and I will shoot and edit the intro for the news show and we can hopefully get everything together by Thursday. This week I will be writing a story for the next news show that we will film on Monday.

Interview for Wellness

On Saturday, Katie and I conducted our first interview for the electronic cigarettes package. We also scheduled a time to meet with the director of the health center, Betty, to talk to her about her opinion on electronic cigarettes. We ran into issues with the audio but eventually came up with a solution to eliminate the buzzing.

Monday Meetings

This morning, we had the first meeting for the news show that will be starting in the coming weeks. We talked about what kind of stories and segments we wanted to work on and decided that our packages should focus on local and campus stories. We also decided that we want to have short advertisements or commercials for the events on campus. This week we will work on story ideas and talk about the format of the show before we get everything together. We also need a day to organize the studio!

At the Wellness TV meeting, we talked about our skills and what we are interested in working on and Katie Becker and I took on a package about electronic cigarettes. I am so excited for both groups to really get going so we can start airing the shows on the campus channel.
